These stones were made in Scotland until the C20th and used for pounding and husking small amounts of grain.

Gyro Nights was a unique festival on Orkney that took place on the small island of Papay on the first full moon in February with films shown from around the world, performance, the free university, international artists and musicians. The weather was often wild, films were shown in cold byres but there was always joy among those who made it and a procession with burning torches through the darkness to the Gyro Night Fire.
