The Reverand Alexander Goodfellow writing about Stove, in his Sanday Church History 1912 says that close to the extensive farmhouse "a peerie fort had been built with some cannon mounted more for ornament than defence one would think ". These buildings were gone by the time he wrote this and the land where they once stood had become the sea and bay.
Possibly the firing of the cannon was part of a Diabolic Performance at one of the Stoave Feasts, described thus by a Williamite Presbyterian delegation visiting in 1690 charged with rooting out Jacobites.
