Autumn Leaves
rare on Sanday
sorbus aucuparia
from the lowest branches of a rowan tree in Helen Scott's woodland at Stove
In a small field behind the house, Helen Scott planted elder and willow around the outer edge within a dry stone dyke. These withstand the gales and have created shelter for other more exotic trees that will only grow here with protection. The single rowan stands in the heart of her wood and even there it's leaves are mostly burnt brown by the frequent gales which start around the time of the Autumn equinox.
