Flint Pebbles

Flint Pebbles
probably ballast from a sailing ship

from Spurness

These flint pebbles are found in abundance on a small beach on the southern point of Spurness, Sanday. Flint does not occur naturally on the island but since the C16th it has been used as ballast and jettisoned when no longer needed. It can also commonly be found on Orkney shores near ship wreck sites.
