These dogs, very popular in the 19th Century, are early ones from Staffordshire. They were made in a slip mould, glazed, fired, then handpainted with gold and on glaze enamel before being fired again at a low temperature. The painting was often done by young children. On these two dogs the gold medallions around their necks have been forgotten.
Sometimes placed in windows, they were used to convey secret messages, depending on how they were placed; such as - my husband is away at sea - it is not a safe time to visit.
