The Brodie helmet is named after it's designer Sir John Leopold Brodie. It was intended to protect soldiers in World War 1 from head and neck wounds, particularly from flying shrapnel. The design is based on a medieval Kettle Helm. Until the manufacture of the Brodie Helmet the soldiers did not wear metal head protection. It was also known as the dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin. The German soldiers called it salatschuffel - salad bowl.
