After World War 1 the farm at Stove shut down, the house became empty and Helen Scott went to work at a tailor's shop on the island making men's suits, learning to use a sewing machine and acquiring one of her own. She returned to Stove in the 1920's, by then married to John, when the house was bought by the Ministry of Agriculture, split in half and given to returning servicemen to live in and work as crofts. John qualified for this having had spent WW1 in the Navy. The Scott's lived at Stove as crofters for the rest of their lives.
